Which products are covered by CE and UKCA marking?
CE and UKCA marking applies to several product ranges placed on the European market. Each product must be assessed individually to determine whether it is subject to CE/UKCA marking. In general, the following products are concerned by this certification:
- Electrical and electronic products: household appliances, mobile phones, computers, etc.
- Toys and games: dolls, miniature cars, board games, etc.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE): helmets, gloves, goggles, etc.
- Medical equipment: diagnostic devices, prostheses, dialysis equipment, etc.
- Chemical products: cleaning products, cosmetics, etc.
- Pressure equipment: tanks, boilers, etc.
- Safety devices for vehicles: airbags, seat belts, etc.
For a product to meet the standards and be eligible, it must comply with the essential requirements defined in the European directives specific to each product category.
Each directive sets out specific requirements for manufacturers to ensure that their products are safe and comply with European standards. Manufacturers must comply with these directives in order to be able to affix the CE/UKCA mark to their products and market them legally in the European Economic Area.
Companies exporting to the UK will have to apply the UKCA marking to products:
- Intended for the UK market after 1 January 2023.
- Governed by legislation that requires the UKCA mark.
- Must have a conformity assessment carried out by a UK third-party body.
UKCA versus CE marking
There are very few differences between these two types of marking.
The UKCA marking applies to items that require CE marking:
- It can only be affixed if the products have been assessed by bodies approved by the UK authorities (UKAS).
- It will not be recognised on the European Union market.
- Self-declared CE manufacturers can also apply for UKCA marking.
- Double marking is possible (CE and UKCA) for products destined for the 2 markets: EU and UK.
- UKCA marking cannot be used for the Northern Ireland market, which requires CE marking or UK-NI marking.
